If you catch yourself missing love or peace, joy or self-control, the problem is not that you have lost these things. They are the fruit of the Spirit. They are the result of time with Him, dancing in tandem, moving together. You can’t will the fruit of the Spirit to be in your life. I’m not even sure you can simply pray for them to be in your life. You can surrender to the Spirit. Daily. Hourly. Period. He does not produce anything but good in us.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23
God also gave us a Spirit of power, love and self-control. He gave it to us. We don’t have to act out of fear or dread; we can act of out of faith and self-control.
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:6-7
God’s been speaking this to me again and again lately: If you find in yourself attributes you don’t want — worry, anxiety, anger, deceitfulness, judgment — it’s time to reconnect with the Spirit. I think we sometimes pray for peace, pray for love, pray for self-control, as a passing request to God when we’re feeling upset with ourselves. The fact is, He’s already given us the answer to those prayers in His Spirit. He would say to us: Linger here with Me! I will develop in you the things you need.
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
