God is love; so, nothing loving exists apart from Him. Even those who do not know, if they have felt any inkling of unblemished love in their life, they’ve experienced God.
Find yourself kneeling in complete darkness, deep in a forest perhaps, and the rays you always hoped would come begin to appear over a far horizon you cannot see. The darkness begins to lighten. Slowly and mysteriously.
You do not know the source of this dim ability to see, but you are beginning to see by it. Squinting. Rubbing your eyes. Things are getting clearer. You have not yet seen the magnificence of the sun rising boldly in front of you — a moment that arrests all by beauty and warmth and the promise of brightness beyond description — but you wonder and imagine its splendor.
You’re still in the early morning haze, but you’ve been exposed to the truth: That darkness is not what you were meant for. After all, these eyes you have, they work better by this lovely new lantern. Somewhere not too far off, a glorious hope is gaining.
In the cold of winter, in this season we fill with lights as if to trick ourselves into believing the long days are not over, remember the source of all Light. Remember the Love He gave. The Love He gives. The Love He is.
